MIND

WHY PEOPLE DON´T COMMIT TO THEIR NEW YEAR´S RESOLUTIONS. YOU WILL AFTER READING THIS.

READING TIME: 4 MIN-

The biggest mistakes when it comes to a list of resolutions is waiting for a new year to begin so we can change. Still, most us need that extra kick of a new year to feel motivated. We think Christmas gives us permission to indulge in everything we want, we succumb to instant gratification, and pacify our guilt with a NEW YEAR´S RESOLUTION LIST.

aah the new year is coming, so we drink, smoke, eat and shop more tan usual. Some wake up on January first with a massive hangover swearing that will be their last. Others start the year with 20 extra pounds, huge debts on their credit cards and lungs that can barely take one more puff.

We feel motivated to change, all the excesses of the Christmas season leave us feeling drained but inspire. Some start their resolutions straight away, not one more cigarette, not one more pie, not one more drink. Others keep thinking, “tomorrow will be easier, I can´t today, I have this and that”.

Then the days go by, the weeks, the months. The healthy diet has gone to oblivion along with the motivation that the New Year brought. The new year quickly becomes just another year and we go back to our usual ways.

Motivation

Just how we need to eat fiber everyday, we need to inspire and motivate ourselves everyday. Keep that list somewhere you can read it EVERYDAY, along with the benefits that you are looking to meet.

Fit in those skinny jeans, save money for that dream vacation, running up a pile of stairs (in the case of the smokers).

But also WRITE A LIST OF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU DON´T ACCOMPLISH YOUR RESOLUTIONS. Sometimes the consequences of NOT changing can be a better motivation.

A Mistake is not Failure

So, you decided to quit smoking and three days later you smoked a cigarette, you feel that’s the end of your resolution and give up. A mistake is not failure, SO WHAT! IF YOU ATE THAT PIE, smoked that cigarette, had that drink or didn’t go out for a run this morning. Is a mistake!. Failure would be to give up and never try again.

A Habit takes time to become a habit

It´s going to be hard at the beginning, whatever it is that you are starting to do and didn’t do before, is hard. If you´ve NEVER smoke and start smoking, trust me, is hard and stupid (please don´t start smoking). CONTINUOUS REPETITIONS IS WHAT CREATES A HABIT.

I use to be a Facebook junkie, when I deleted my personal Facebook account it felt weird. I would wake up in the mornings and felt like something was missing, cause I wasn’t getting my daily dose of Facebook gossip.

After three weeks I was a recovered Facebook junkie, and now I have more free time to write on my blog.

I know!!! quitting Facebook is relatively easy, now quitting smoking?, THAT’S MY BIGGEST RESOLUTION. But I’m taking baby steps, which takes me to my next tip.

Don´t try to eat the whole pie in one bite.

Baby steps!! Suddenly the New Year is here and we feel like we have to make all this drastic changes, I´m not saying it can´t be done. I’m sure Anthony Robbins and some of you can, but for us mere mortals sometimes it takes a slower pace.

If you decided to start a diet, quit smoking, stop biting your nails, work harder and make more time for your kids, all at the same time. Is very likely you´ll go insane within the first week.

Your resolutions are great! But take it slowly. Don´t start a drastic diet while you´re quitting smoking, or instead cut down on the number of cigarettes you smoke. Is not a marathon!

IF YOU TRY TO DO EVERYTHING AT THE SAME TIME, YOU MIGHT GET FRUSTRATE AND WANT TO QUIT EVERYTHING.

Prioritizing is the key to focus

I once wrote 23 resolutions for the New Year. YES!!! There´s a lot I need to change in my self. The problem was that I had all this resolutions and even if a year is a lot of time I ended up loosing focus.

Luckily I did achieved TWO, so at the end of the year I had something to feel proud of, the downside was that it wasn’t any of the important ones.

Select which ones are more important for you.

Like, quitting smoking is important, because it kind of has a deadline on it. Or if you want to spend more time with your family but you also want to work harder, which one is more important?

Don´t leave for tomorrow what you can do today

Just like I was saying at the beginning, waiting for a new year to change so we can change, is motivational and all, but now we have this YEAR and is brand NEW. And it will be new until the next one comes. So, there´s really no excuses.

One of the most damaging thoughts we can have –regarding our willpower is to believe that tomorrow will be easier to change something. Don´t get me wrong, I believe in the philosophy that everything has its time under the stars, but come on, some things, or actually most things, need to be done today.

Acceptance

THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE.

Many times is not about changing, is about accepting the things we can´t change. I don´t know what last year was like for you, maybe there were changes you didn’t like and you´re still struggling with them. I know I am.

We struggle until we accept. I’m not saying things get easier once we do, but accepting makes things less tiring and most importantly, it gives you closure to begin a New Year with a new light. Is just like fighting the ocean, you can´t, it will wear you out, you just have to let go and hope for the best.

I WISH YOU AN AMAZING AND INCREDIBLE NEW YEAR. THAT YOU ACHIEVE EVERYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO AND THAT YOU LET GO OF WHATEVER IS HURTING YOU.

  • Hey Caroline,

I guess that I’ve came too late here (new year was almost 7 months ago). But, that can’t prevent me from commenting.

I’ve never ever made a new year resolution, since I’m always already assured that mine won’t work. I firmly believe that we find a way to do what we want to do, and won’t ever do even after a twenty new years, if we aren’t really willing to do it.

However, people do what works for them I guess. But new year isn’t the only right time.
